Before investing anything (Guide 01), and while you have money that hasn't found a destination yet, you need somewhere to keep it. This guide compares the options and explains two things that are almost never explained well: what actually protects your money if a bank fails, and how these "boring" products are taxed.
Las cuatro opciones básicas
The four basic options
| Producto | Product | Liquidez | Liquidity | Para qué sirve | What it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cuenta corriente normal | Regular checking account | Inmediata | Gastos del día a día. No busques rentabilidad aquí. | Day-to-day spending. Don't look for returns here. | |
| Emergency fund and money without a destination yet. The default option in this series. |
| Depósito a plazo fijo | Fixed-term deposit | Bloqueada hasta vencimiento (con penalización si sales antes) | Locked until maturity (with a penalty if you exit early) | Solo si sabes con certeza que no vas a necesitar ese dinero antes del plazo. | Only if you know for certain you won't need that money before the term ends. |
| Letras del Tesoro a corto plazo | Short-term Treasury bills | Bloqueada hasta vencimiento, pero se pueden vender antes en mercado secundario | Locked until maturity, but can be sold earlier on the secondary market | Alternativa a la cuenta remunerada para el excedente del fondo de emergencia (ver Ficha 04). | An alternative to the interest-bearing account for the surplus of your emergency fund (see Guide 04). |
What actually matters before opening an interest-bearing account
| Letra pequeña | Fine print | Por qué importa | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Importe máximo remunerado | Maximum remunerated amount | Muchas ofertas solo pagan esa TAE hasta 10.000-50.000 €; el resto, a veces a 0 %. | Many offers only pay that APR up to €10,000-50,000; the rest, sometimes at 0%. |
| Duración de la oferta | Length of the offer | Buena parte son promociones a 6-12 meses, no un tipo fijo indefinido. | Many are 6-12 month promotions, not an indefinite fixed rate. |
| Direct-depositing your payroll, activating a payment app, or making a minimum number of transactions — if you don't meet them, the APR drops or disappears. |
| A monthly fee can eat up a large share of the interest earned if the balance is low. |
What happens if the bank fails: the Deposit Guarantee Fund
In Spain (and across the EU), the Deposit Guarantee Fund (FGD) covers up to €100,000 per holder and per institution, whether it's a checking account, an interest-bearing account or a term deposit — you don't need to sign up for anything extra, it's automatic. Two practical consequences:
Cómo tributan los intereses
How the interest is taxed
Interest from interest-bearing accounts and deposits counts as investment income and is taxed within the savings tax base (the same 19%-30% brackets covered in Guide 09). The bank withholds 19% when it pays you the interest — that withholding is just an advance: on your tax return it's adjusted to the rate you actually owe, based on your total savings tax base for that year.
Qué hacer según tu tramo
What to do depending on your bracket
For money you can't afford to lose or have locked away, a fee-free, no-lock-in interest-bearing account is the default option — everything else (deposits, bills) only makes sense once you know for certain when you'll need that money.
Always compare the real APR, the remunerated cap and the requirements before settling on a specific offer: they change constantly, and what's the best option today may not be in a few months.
