Renta variable para principiantes

Equities for beginners

Stocks, index funds and ETFs: buying a piece of a company, with everything good and bad that comes with it

Investing in equities means buying a piece of a company: if it does well, your piece is worth more (and it may pay dividends); if it does badly, it's worth less. Over the long term it tends to offer higher returns than fixed income, but with real drops in value along the way — including 30-50% drawdowns at some point in any long horizon. If you can't stomach that without selling in a panic, this isn't where you should keep money you might need soon.

Picking individual stocks vs. an index fund: this guide's most important decision

Requires analyzing each company (accounts, sector, competition) so you're not betting blind. All the risk depends on a handful of companies: if one goes bankrupt, that part of your money is gone. It requires reviewing and adjusting the portfolio over time.
Replicates an index (hundreds or thousands of companies) with a single purchase — much more spread out than a single stock, though "diversified" has nuances worth knowing (see section 2). Very low fees (TER) compared to actively managed funds. You don't need to analyze individual companies or guess "which one's going up".
For someone starting out (and, honestly, for most people who don't do this professionally), one or two global index funds are a more sensible starting point than picking individual stocks. This isn't an isolated opinion: decades of data show that most actively managed funds fail to consistently beat their benchmark index once fees are deducted.

What "diversified" means in 2026 (a nuance that didn't exist a few years ago)

For two decades the standard advice has been "buy a global index fund or the S&P 500, that's how you diversify". That advice is still reasonable compared to picking random individual stocks — but "diversified" doesn't mean the same thing today as it did 15 years ago, and it's worth knowing before assuming a single fund already has you covered.

The most popular stock indices (the S&P 500, and by extension the MSCI World, which is over 60% weighted toward the US) are today more concentrated in a handful of large tech companies than they have been in decades. A "global" index fund may still hold thousands of positions on paper, but a very large share of its value and daily movement depends on fewer than ten companies. That doesn't make it a bad product — it's still far more sensible than betting on a single stock — but if you think you're spreading risk across very different sectors (banks, energy, consumer goods, tech in reasonable proportions), it's worth checking whether that's still true.

A data point for context, not prediction: as of September 2026, the S&P 500's Shiller CAPE ratio (a valuation measure comparing price to average real earnings over the last 10 years) sits around 40, the second-highest level in its entire historical record, only surpassed in the year 2000. This says nothing about when the market might correct — nobody knows that reliably, not even professionals — but historically, starting from such high valuations has been associated with lower real returns over the following decade than the historical average. It's a data point to weigh when deciding how much to allocate to equities, not a signal to sell or avoid them.

Open your fund or ETF's factsheet (on the manager's website, or any fund screener) and look at its "top holdings" or "top 10 positions". Add up the percentage those top 10 represent — if it's much higher than you expected, it doesn't mean you should sell, but you should know exactly what you own. If later on you hold several different funds "to diversify", check they aren't all overweight in the same 5-6 companies — that's very common, and it defeats much of the point of holding several funds (see Guide 11, for when your portfolio grows).

What exactly an index is, and a fund that tracks it

An index (for example, one that groups the largest listed companies in the world, or just those in the US) is a reference list. An index fund or an ETF that "tracks" that index buys the same companies in the corresponding proportion — so when you buy a share, you're actually buying a small piece of all of them at once (with the nuance from the previous section about how that small piece is actually distributed).

Contributing little by little, not all at once

Contributing a fixed amount every month (instead of investing everything at once) spreads out the risk of buying right before a drop — it's a simple way to take the pressure off deciding "when's the best time", which even professionals don't get right consistently.

A Spanish tax difference worth knowing: funds vs. ETFs

If you switch from one investment fund to another (for example, to rebalance your portfolio), Spanish law doesn't treat it as a sale: you aren't taxed until you finally take the money out of the fund system. With an ETF, every sale is an independent taxable event — whether you sell to reinvest or to spend it, it's taxed the same way, at the same time. The final tax rate is the same in both cases (19-30% depending on bracket, see Guide 09): the difference isn't how much you pay, but when — funds let you defer that payment if you rebalance your portfolio frequently.

Qué hacer según tu tramo

What to do depending on your bracket

TramoBracketEnfoque razonableReasonable approach
One or two global index funds, with periodic contributions. Enough diversification without complicating things.
You can spread across geographies (developed/emerging) or add some small-cap exposure, always through diversified funds.
More room to fine-tune the portfolio (sectors, factors), but the diversified core is still the foundation — sophistication doesn't replace diversification.

For almost anyone starting out, one or two global index funds with periodic contributions beat picking individual stocks on simplicity, cost and diversification — and the occasional sharp drop isn't a flaw in the system, it's the price of long-term returns.
